A heru is a Māori decorative wearable comb, suitable for both genders.

Meaning:

The shape of this design is a Manaia, a creature with the head of a bird, body of a man and a tail of a fish. It acts as a guardian and protector, embodying the balance between the sky, earth and sea.

The body of the manaia is shaped as a Pikorua (Double twist) which symbolises eternal love, eternal friendship, and the binding of 2 people or 2 cultures for eternity.

The Korus inside the Manaia represent the continuous movement of life, new begginings, new opportunities, growth and harmony. It is a powerful representation of renewal and change.
