This Māori Tewhatewha is a striking representation of traditional Māori craftsmanship and leadership. Measuring approximately 105cm x 20cm, it is an impressive display piece and a meaningful addition to any collection.
Commonly known as a chiefly weapon, the Tewhatewha is a carved long-handled Māori club shaped like an axe. Designed to be held with two hands, it features a mata (pointed end) on one side and a rapa (broad, quarter-round blade) on the other.
Traditionally carried by chiefs and leaders (rangatira), the Tewhatewha held both practical and symbolic significance. During battle, it was used not only as a weapon but also as a signalling tool, allowing leaders to direct and guide warriors on the battlefield.
