The Tino Rangatiratanga flag, also known as the national Maori flag, is used to represent the Māori people of New Zealand. It is a powerful symbol of Māori sovereignty and independence.
- Black: Represents Te Korekore, the realm of potential being. It symbolizes the long darkness and the cosmic void from which the world emerged.
- White: Represents Te Ao Mārama, the physical realm of being and light. It symbolizes harmony, balance, and the moment the earth and sky were separated.
- Red: Represents Te Whai Ao, the realm of coming into being. It symbolizes Papatūānuku (the Earth Mother), life force, and new growth.
- Koru: The white central spiral represents a curling fern frond. It symbolizes the unfurling of new life, renewal, rebirth and hope for the future.

Tūrou parea, Tūrou Hawaiki.
May the ancient homeland of Hawaiki glisten on in mind's eye forever
- Simply translated this whakatauki can be understood as ‘May the force be with you’. Or the full version is, "May the ancient homeland of Hawaiki glisten on in mind's eye forever". The phrase "Tūrou Hawaiki" is commonly used as a kīwaha in everyday speech. Hawaiki is understood to be the place of origin for Māori. In the Far North, we believe that when someone passes on their spirit goes to Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) and enters Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (Pacific Ocean) to travel back to Hawaiki. This taonga reminds us of heritage, ancestry and identity.
