Used by Māori warriors for close combat in New Zealand’s dense bush, these compact weapons were designed for stabbing motions similar to a knife. Traditionally made from stone or jade, this wooden version includes a strong wrist tether to ensure a secure grip during intense use, reflecting both the practical function and cultural heritage of Māori weaponry.
The Taurapa, or waka sternpost, was traditionally placed in a vertical position at the stern of a powerful war canoe known as a waka taua. Crafting such a canoe required immense talent, and those skilled in the art gained high levels of prestige and respect as priests and craftsmen due to their expert knowledge and abilities.
