The Tino Rangatiratanga flag, also known as the national Maori flag, is used to represent the Māori people of New Zealand. It is a powerful symbol of Māori sovereignty and independence.
- Black: Represents Te Korekore, the realm of potential being. It symbolizes the long darkness and the cosmic void from which the world emerged.
- White: Represents Te Ao Mārama, the physical realm of being and light. It symbolizes harmony, balance, and the moment the earth and sky were separated.
- Red: Represents Te Whai Ao, the realm of coming into being. It symbolizes Papatūānuku (the Earth Mother), life force, and new growth.
- Koru: The white central spiral represents a curling fern frond. It symbolizes the unfurling of new life, renewal, rebirth and hope for the future.
It was first revealed on Waitangi Day in 1990 and became formally recognized as the national Māori flag in December 2009
